The website, IfItWasMyHome, allows the user to place the BP Gulf oil spill over any town or city in the world. It is an enormously useful tool for visualizing the current size of the spill and the area it actually impacts. The picture below is a screenshot taken with the spill centered on Washington DC. If it were centered on our home in Erie, PA, it is likely to have obviously unfortunate, yet interesting implications, as it would cover areas of Southern Canada and a major shipping corridor, potentially affecting US-Canadian relations and international commerce, as well as the critical tourist and rare ecological regions of Lake Erie.
